Bit of a #throwbackthursday post today, as I’m once again on a train heading for the annual Blackpool Magic Convention.
Here’s what I said back in 2019, and it’s still true today….
This weekend, 3500 magicians from all over the world will descend on the ‘Nice of the north’. They’ll be catching up with friends, buying the latest tricks, sharing ideas and routines, and moaning about the showers at their B&B (“it’s like catching icy tears” said a friend, ruefully).
The dealers’ hall – a huge ballroom of over 200 magic vendors – is about as close to Diagon Alley as you can get without actually being a wizard. Watching someone walk in there for the first time is priceless (unlike the wares on sale).
Over 3,000 magicians in one place is quite a treat for the senses. Many will be wearing black. Several will be wearing three-piece suits. More than you might expect will be wearing hats. And sadly a few could do with spending longer in that dodgy B&B shower (or at least applying some Lynx Voodoo or Java). But, all things considered, it’s lots of fun.
There are now a plethora of fantastic professional magicians available to amaze your guests, should you hire one for your next wedding, birthday party or corporate function and magic is a great way to get people talking and turn small groups into big ones through shared experience. A good magician can transform a get-together into a memorable event for everyone who attends.
With so much choice, how do you know where to start when it comes to finding the perfect magician?
The trick to building a name for yourself in the world of magic is not just about wearing something outlandish and hoping it helps people track you down. You need to provide professional and engaging customer service that impresses the client who’s booked you, as much as you impress their guests.
In this sense it’s not much different to your business or mine.
Find a way to differentiate. Tell people about it. Keep telling them about it in new and interesting ways. And then, when someone wants you to work for them, amaze them so much that they’re compelled to tell their friends and peers and won’t hesitate to contact you again when future works required.
